Household Hazardous Waste

  • Door-to-Door HHW Program Ends December 31, 2016
    As of December 12, 2016 all remaining appointments are fully booked. Please refer to the San Mateo County program to schedule a drop off appointment

    The Door-to-Door Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program operated by Waste Management’s At Your Door Special Collection is ending December 31, 2016 for all residents in the RethinkWaste service area. Appointments leading up to the December 31, deadline have been fully booked as of December 12. Following is information on why the contract was not continued, and information on the alternative drop off program run by the County of San Mateo

    On November 17, 2016, the SBWMA Board of Directors declined to accept the proposed new 5-year pricing presented by Waste Management for its At-Your-Door Special Collection Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Service that currently exists in the entire SBWMA service area.
    Waste Management and RethinkWaste staff negotiated in good faith to extend the current contract for an additional five years, however, the main reasons why this residential program’s contract was not renewed are:
    • The annual price would double by the end of the 5-year extension (from about $140 per pick up to almost $300 per pick up) ;
    • Annual program participation rates were less than six percent; and
    • San Mateo County has an existing HHW collection drop-off program, which residents can participate in at any time.

    Household Hazardous Waste material can continue to be taken to the San Mateo County HHW collection facility or a temporary collection event for residents who are unable to participate in the At Your Door program by December 31. Visit www.smchealth.org/hhw or call (650) 363-4718 (select option 3) to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

  • California Paint Stewardship Program

    PaintCare

    In addition to the Door-to-Door HHW collection program, the County's HHW program, and free drop-off of latex paint at the Shoreway Environmental Center, residents have one more new way to recycle old paint. The PaintCare program is an industry sponsored paint stewardship, non-profit program launched in October 2012.

    Residents

    Residents may recycle latex and oil-based paint at these locations in the RethinkWaste service area.

    Please call ahead to confirm, and to determine if the location has limits on the amount they will accept, especially if you have more than 5 gallons of paint.
