No-charge busing is still provided for 3rd-5th grade classes in our service area of Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, parts of the unincorporated San Mateo County, and the West Bay Sanitary District.

Activity Options

Please let us know what activity you would like your class to participate in while you schedule the tour.

  1. Sorting: students will get to practice sorting a bag of waste as a group. Students will finds items we discussed and a few tricky items that they will have to use their critical thinking to choose whether it should be placed in the recycling, compost, or trash.
  2. Natural resource matching game: in this activity, students will learn what natural resources their everyday items come from. As a class, they will then decide if that resource is renewable or non-renewable.
  3. Planting activity*: students learn about nutrient recycling and how materials in their green cart will be processed to make compost. Students will use this compost to plant a seed in biodegradable cups.
  4. Worm composting*: students learn about vermicomposting, which is the practice of using worms to break down food scraps. Worms like to feed on slowly decomposing organic materials (like fruit and vegetable scraps) and create a material that is a mix of worm castings and decomposed food scraps. Students will also use magnifying glasses to identify critters in the worm bin.

*Activities 3-4 are weather permitting.

School Group Tours

Tours of the award winning state-of-the-art Shoreway Environmental Center offer students and the community an opportunity to learn first-hand what happens to their recyclables, yard trimmings, food scraps and garbage at a working Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station. The program seeks to engage students and increase their knowledge through active learning experiences. The curriculum goal is to educate kids in resource conservation and 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot/Composting) behaviors so that they will be empowered to conserve resources in their lives and practice recycling at their schools and residences.

The tour activities are based on the best practices in environmental education and provide connections to the California State Common Core Standards.

The award winning Environmental Education Tour Program strives to deliver quality, memorable, hands-on learning experiences to school groups and the general public. A Tour Menu  gives teachers an opportunity to choose a call-to-action supplemental activity they would like to engage in with their students.

Standard Tour includes:

  • A two-hour visit to the Transfer Station, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Education Center with museum quality exhibits, Outdoor Environmental Education Center, Solar and Water Conservation Kiosk, and more.
  • Learning about resource conservation and the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot) that are aligned to the State Content Standards.
